Coming out of lockdown

Hi everyone

I hope you’re all doing well and have been enjoying cycling as part of your daily exercise – especially now that the weather is improving.

I just wanted to give an update of what’s been happening at TWCCG over the last few months.

In this latest lockdown, what with homeschooling and the sound of constant Zoom meetings, it’s been constantly busy in our household. I’m not complaining – we’ve just knuckled down and got on with it!

There have been exciting developments with TWCCG and we have been planning our learn-to-ride and cycling confidence sessions which we hope to start again soon. More on this below.

Louise and I are halfway through our British Cycling Level 1 Coaching training, and are looking forward to completing the course when we’re out of lockdown.  A massive thanks to Beth from British Cycling for sorting this out for us!

Firstly, and what a joy it is to be able to say this, TWCCG now has a bank account. You would not believe the issues we had whilst trying to set this up!

Last year we were awarded some funding from Greater Sports and Sport England’s Tackling Inequalities Fund, and now that we have the bank account set up, we have been able to use some of this to buy our very own bikes and helmets! 🎉

Huge thanks to Andy Dwyer from Tameside Sports and Physical Network for his help with this – and for his continued and much appreciated support!

Our plans for this year are to gradually introduce cycling on the road, provide bike maintenance classes and organise Breeze group rides.

We want to achieve so much this year with our learners, and as always we have bundles of patience to work through all of these, always at your pace.

More than anything, we feel really excited about starting back again. We believe the more we can practice and develop together, that confidence will grow over time.

When I lived in Peckham, I used to practice my cycling round Peckham Rye Park. I have blissful memories of breezing amongst beautiful rows of acers in the Japanese Garden, meandering round the Sexby Garden admiring the flowing wisteria. I also loved it because the park was mostly a flat surface throughout!

We’ve got some lovely parks and trails right here on our doorsteps in Tameside.  We want to make use of these beautiful public spaces available to us.  This is something we will incorporate this year, especially as the weather improves. More on this to come – I promise!

And finally, we are hoping that our TWCCG learn-to-ride and cycling confidence sessions for 2021 will be able to start again next month!

This being said, it goes without saying our plans will depend on what comes from the Government announcement on Monday, so fingers crossed.

We have already booked the sessions at the track, so if there is good news in the announcement, we will give you more details.

Hopefully we will be back to actually doing things like this, after what seems like such a long time of just talking about all the things we would like to do.

All that’s left to say is not long to go now. We will keep you posted and we’ll hopefully see you very soon.

Atchara x
